Tesla production in Giga Shanghai is to resume full speed

reportedly plans Teslaproduction at the Shanghai plant resumed by Tuesday to bring the level before lowering the production rates. The decline in production was necessary due to the Covid 19 lockdown in Shanghai. Now they want to increase production in the Giga Shanghai. Even double it, to 2,600 e-vehicles a day. This would increase Tesla’s weekly production to 15,600 electric vehicles.

Reuters previously reported that Tesla Shanghai was targeting to bring production back to pre-shutdown levels on May 16. But on May 16, an updated Reuters report said Tesla had delayed the plan by at least a week. So it was a challenge for Tesla to double the number of workers living near the production line by one “closed circuit” to maintain. There is also uncertainty on the supply side as factories in Shanghai and surrounding areas for suppliers and logistics have not yet returned to normal.

Despite the fact that production fell slightly in March 2022 due to failures in the Giga Shanghai, the mood seems to remain positive. The tapes rested there for six days. The Fremont plant also fell short of its potential. These setbacks will become apparent in the second quarter of 2022, because the conveyors stopped in Shanghai and only ran for a frame in mid-April „Closed Loop Managements“ again – but only with one instead of two shifts. Compensating for the failures in the Giga Shanghai is difficult to absorb. Especially, since the Giga Berlin also falls short of expectations. Tesla continues to focus on expanding its own business.

Capacity utilization at Tesla’s Shanghai plant was over 45 percent, slightly below SAIC’s (50 percent), a Lingang New District official said at a news conference May 17. On May 20, a Bloomberg report said Tesla plans to keep employees at its Shanghai plant working in closed circuits through mid-June, even if Shanghai eases lockdown restrictions.

Thousands of workers at the company have been sleeping at the plant in 12-hour shifts, six days a week, to get production back on track after weeks of the lockdown shutdown. Musk spoke out as part of the announcement of the figures for the first quarter of 2022 as follows about the developments in China: “And the factory in Shanghai is already up and running again. As Zach said, we remain confident that we can increase vehicle production by 50% in 2022 over 21. I think we even have a reasonable chance of a 60% increase over last year.”
