Tesla expansion encounters resistance –

Tesla has been delivering electric cars from its new German factory in Brandenburg near Berlin since March. The plant in the municipality of Grünheide was supposed to start series production in mid-2021, but there were delays. In addition to short-term changes by Tesla and the local bureaucracy, the project was slowed down by protests from local residents and environmentalists. Now the expansion of the site is also meeting with resistance.

Tesla plans according to information from rbb24.deto expand its area in the east by around 100 hectares. The development plan for this area would have to be changed for this. The US electric car manufacturer recently submitted an application, as the mayor of Grünheide, Arne Christiani (independent), confirmed. At the beginning of June, the main committee of the municipality of Grünheide should deal with the application. Christiani assumes that the majority of the municipal council will recommend initiating the development plan procedure. He expects a possible resolution on the articles of association in just under a year at the earliest.

Environmentalists have criticized the plans to initiate the zoning process to expand the Tesla site. Part of the area is a water protection area that prohibits the conversion of forest into another type of use, explained the Brandenburg Association for Nature and Landscape. The entire area is an outdoor area according to Section 35 of the Building Code. According to this, projects are only permissible if public interests are not impaired – but that is the case with Tesla’s expansion plans. Forest conversion has been successfully carried out on the area since the 1990s.

According to reports, Tesla wants to build a freight station, logistics areas and parking spaces on the additional area targeted. According to the municipality, the area is in the immediate vicinity of the current 300-hectare site.


In the first expansion phase, Tesla wants to produce up to 500,000 vehicles a year in Grünheide. Around 12,000 people are to be employed for this purpose. In addition to electric cars, the batteries used in them are also to be manufactured at the site later on. The e-car and battery factories were approved in March, the first stage of e-car production had already been completed. Tesla initially built its first European factory at its own risk via provisional permits.
