Battery technology should enable charging for 160 km in five minutes

One of the biggest obstacles to the spread of electromobility is the charging time for electric car batteries. The Israeli start-up StoreDot wants to start series production of a new battery technology for “extreme fast charging” in 2024, which should enable an additional 100 miles (approx. 160 kilometers) of range after only five minutes of recharging. StoreDot has now demonstrated its first successes with silicon-dominated XFC lithium-ion batteries in a YouTube video.

A demonstration in front of an audience at the innovation fair EcoMotionWeek 2022 in Tel Aviv was streamed live on the internet. The “100in5” charging object, a 300 by 100 millimeter pouch cell from partner EVE Energy in China, was charged from 0 to 86 percent in ten minutes without overheating. In the end, the nominal charge of the 24 Ah cell was 20 Ah (ampere hours), the voltage during the charging process was a good 4 volts.
According to their own statements hat StoreDot Tests of more than 1200 cycles of pure fast charging have now been successfully carried out with the cells. The batteries were charged to 80 percent in 15 minutes and then discharged for an hour. A long and good durability should make the batteries more attractive, also for use in “Second Life” as energy storage or network load balancing.

In March 2022, StoreDot presented its strategic technology roadmap “100inX”. According to this, the charging time for a range of 100 miles should gradually decrease and in 2032 it should even be only two minutes (“100in2”).

Achievement through special fast charging

StoreDot presented its so-called XFC charging and battery technology (XFC = Extreme Fast Charging) at the beginning of 2021. The breakthrough was achieved by replacing the anode’s graphite with metallic nanoparticles. The process should meet the highest requirements in terms of battery life, safety and expansion of the battery.

Super battery can be produced on current production lines

In order to get the batteries ready for production as quickly as possible, the batteries should be able to be manufactured on the production lines of conventional lithium-ion batteries – as at the aforementioned Chinese battery manufacturer EVE, StoreDot’s strategic partner. Investors in the ambitious start-up include Daimler, BP, Samsung and, most recently, Volvo.
